IVANO W. AIELLO
Assistant Professor
Thank you for visiting my web site. This page presents an summary
of my education and research activity. Links to specific subjects
may be found within the text or via the buttons to the left.
I am the Assistant Professor of Geological Oceanography at Moss
Landing Marine Laboratories. I teach several graduate and undergraduate
courses on different topics and methodologies concerning Marine
Geology and cross-disciplinary fields in marine sciences. (Click
here to view my "cv" and a list of my publications.)
I advise several graduate students whose Master projects include
a variety of field-based marine and coastal geological studies in
the Monterey Bay, in central California and elsewhere.
My fields of expertise include sedimentology, paleomagnetism and
tectonics of biogenic marine sedimentary basins. (See
my "cv" and publications.)
My primary current research projects include:
| • |
Sedimentologic, paleoceanographic and paleomagnetic studies
of Mesozoic and Cenozoic upwelling biogenic sediments in Europe
and the Pacific Rim (e.g. Monterey Fmt.)
| |
| |
| • |
Studies of the relationships between geology and microbial
activity in deeply buried marine sediments recovered by the
International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP)
| |
| |
| • |
Studies on tectonics, fluid flow and canyon formation in
the Monterey Bay region of California
| |
| |
| • |
Geologic/geomorphologic and geobiological studies on California’s
rapidly changing coastal environments/ecosytems including
Elkhorn Slough
| |

I have taught several graduate and undergraduate classes on Geological
Oceanography disciplines as well as courses on interdisciplinary
topics of Marine Sciences (see my
"cv"), and mentored and co-advised graduate and undergraduate
students.
MLML’s Geological Oceanography Lab
research equipment allows the execution of a large range of laboratory-based,
and marine- and field-based analyses.
For further information about the Geological Oceanography Lab at
MLML and for potential students feel free to contact
me.
